ABOUT
US |
|
|
|
|
|
Beginning |
|
|
In 1979 a small group of social activists
initiated an integrated development program for Khori village
as an initiative in the region. The focal village Khori is
in Khol block of Rewari district in the state of Haryana.
From Khori village multifarious rural development activities
were taken up for surrounding villages too. The region is
the most backward in the state.
Perceiving and pursuing a goal of organizing
rural communities, especially women, for a meaningful relationship
as partners in progress, SCRIA has also promoted local groups
in Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Assam
who have initiated development work in the rural areas of
their region.
Outreach – Area |
SCRIA
works in 1590 villages that are in Rewari, Mohindergarh,
& Jhajjar districts in southern Haryana &
Churu districts in northern Rajasthan.
The whole region is semi
arid while Churu are arid. It is interspersed
with sand dunes and barren hillocks of Aravali ranges. In
this semi arid zone, days are warm and nights are cool,
with the maximum temperature rising upto 51 deg. C. in summer
and plunging to -4 deg. C. in winter.
The region faces a chronic
shortage of water for drinking & for irrigation purposes.
The table of ground water is very low and most of the ground
water belts in the region are highly saline and not potable.
The region has rain - fed - agrarian economy and is solely
dependent on the vagaries of monsoon rains. No other alternative
source of income is readily available. The density of population
ranges from 90 to 250 persons per sq. km.. |
|
Outreach –
Population |
Women,
men & youth from outreach villages
The region has a traditionally limiting
and rigid patriarchal society where role of women is defined
by their place within the socio economic system. Women do
not have any say over social & economic affairs in family
& society men control it all. In political sphere too
strong patriarchal control marginalizes participation of
women. The women here are affected by the dominant ideology
of the society, but this does not completely insulate them
against an awareness of their subservient position. |
|
Focus |
SCRIA’s
focus is on working with communities to develop appropriate
messages. We believe in participatory approach for effective
and sustainable development in rural areas. People’s
participation leads to long-term efficiency, cost sharing,
self-reliance, grass root initiative and finally to enhanced
village level organizational capacities. |
Rural populace,
especially women, are involved at every stage of the development
process - from problem identification & needs assessment
to project formulation, implementation, monitoring & evaluation. |
